Village of Hawthorn Woods Receives Environmental Grant to Support Community Conservation

The Village of Hawthorn Woods is one of 26 public agencies from throughout northern Illinois to receive a Green Region grant from ComEd and Openlands. As part of the annual ComEd Green Region Program, the Village will receive a grant of $10,000 to support an open space project in the community. Specifically, the funding will be used to extend the Village’s habitat restoration work at Brierwood Preserve to the adjacent public wetland area that is a prominent 7 acre feature at the preserve.

Earlier this year, municipalities throughout northern Illinois submitted their Green Region grant applications, and an advisory committee composed of county government officials and members of the region's conservation community reviewed the applications.

“The Village of Hawthorn Woods extends our appreciation to Com Ed and Openlands for their support of our environmental initiatives”, stated Mayor Joseph Mancino. “Brierwoods Preserve is an oasis from development, and these funds will assist us in diversifying our flora and fauna, with special emphasis on the development of a Monarch butterfly habitat.”

Brierwood Preserve opened last year to the public and consists of a trail through the oak forest, an observation deck overlooking the wetland area, a picnic area, and educational signage to learn about the Monarch butterfly initiative.
