Darlington Bridge Update

Darlington Road remains closed at the choker culvert nearest to Old McHenry Road while the new culvert is being designed and permitted. Two regulatory agencies have jurisdiction over the bridge replacement as the culverts impact waters of the United States and wetlands. Therefore, the United States Army Corp of Engineers, as well as the Lake County Stormwater Agency, will both need to review and permit the new culvert design. The culverts under the road were installed over 40 years ago and made of corrugated metal pipes. Over the decades, the metal rusted and collapsed, resulting in the failure of the roadway over the culverts. The roadway was closed to vehicular and pedestrian use due to unsafe conditions and the posted detour will remain in place throughout this process. We will keep you updated on the progress of design and permits, with each phase expected to take several months. We expect the road to remain closed due to structural failure through the winter, with construction of the culverts and the new roadway to begin in spring of 2018.
