Arbor Day Foundation Names Hawthorn Woods Tree City USA for Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, the Village of Hawthorn Woods received the Tree City USA designation by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Hawthorn Woods proudly achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: establishing a tree board, adopting a tree-care ordinance, supporting an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and holding an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,” said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.” Mayor Joseph Mancino of Hawthorn Woods stated, “We are pleased to share this accomplishment with our residents. Collectively, the Village’s open space areas, recreational facilities, and environmental features enhance quality of life and provide opportunities for interaction with nature. This recognition demonstrates that trees, conservation, and the environment are important to our community.”

Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits. Chief Operating Officer Pamela O. Newton added, “We recognize that trees are vital to the Village’s public infrastructure. In fact, trees serve as one piece of our community’s heritage that we work hard to preserve and enhance. Trees are a part of the identity of Hawthorn Woods.”
